Milestones

We have accompanied many milestones of today's automation and product manufacturing from the very beginning. A selection is listed here.

3D measuring system

A 3D measuring system from Zeiss was acquired to ensure quality. Besides quality assurance, old, obsolete components can also be refurbished and remanufactured. The components are fully integrated into the VWH manufacturing system and can thus be re-procured as spare parts.

Robot on the 7th and 8th axis

A robot on a 7th axis has already been implemented many times. In our system, a robot was mounted on a 7th and 8th axis. In addition to more flexible use, this provides advantages in cycle time and system accessibility.

Integration of a manipulator into a production line with SGM

Integration of manipulators into an injection-molding production line. In this project, in addition to a REFA analysis, production was optimized so that workers could take their breaks without a drop in output.

On-the-fly camera inspection

A backlight camera inspection was integrated into a handling gripper. The vacuum grippers developed for this purpose let through enough light to allow a camera image. Inspection takes place in-process, and data processing is decoupled so that there is no impact on cycle time.

Mold with externally exchanged cores

The mold received cores that were inserted via a rotary indexing table manufactured by us. The challenge of differing temperatures was offset through cooling.

Development of a granulate-based 3D printer

A granulate-based 3D printer was developed for producing sample parts. The special feature of this printing process is that the actual production plastics can be used to create the first samples, more accurately replicating the later material properties.

Fastest injection-molding automation changeover

An automation solution for an injection molding machine with changeover times of 1.2 seconds. The mold used was a 3-component mold in which the parts have to be repositioned.

First use of bio-plastics

In a research project, components were manufactured based on corn starch and wood. The parts are fully compostable and thus have a smaller CO2 footprint.

Laser cutting cell with continuous motion

As early as 2012, we built a fully synchronized laser cell that cut out components in motion, triggered by an external signal. The parts are cut out using a 6-head, 3-axis laser handling system while a mat is continuously conveyed in sync with the process.

Plastic laser welding of rotating components

First-time use of a laser source to weld two plastics together in an airtight seal. The components were rotated during welding to guarantee complete sealing.

Injection-molding automation with insert-outsert technology

To increase productivity, components were fully automatically inserted into an injection molding system and removed after overmolding. The entire system was controlled via a PLC programmed by VWH and delivered as a complete system including CE certification.

First construction of 2-component molds

As a 2-component mold, metal parts were inserted into an eight-cavity injection mold, overmolded, and then removed.

Complete data integration into customer database

Integration of workpiece data into an SQL database with full traceability. Even then, the data was verified, and the decision on good parts was made through system evaluation.

Founding of VWH

The company was officially incorporated under the name VWH in 1994, following the takeover of the business from the former VDO and the re-founding of the group. The new name came from the then core business areas of fixture and tool making, and the company's headquarters in Herschbach Oberwesterwald. In the course of this, the engineering division was built up, and the product portfolio was expanded to include complex assembly systems in the automotive, consumer electronics, household appliance, and medical technology sectors.
